Vedic Chanting: Sri Rudram, Purusha Suktham, Mantra Pushpam & more

Review by MyHinduPage.org
If you love the mystical ambiance that sanskrit chanting creates, this audio MP3 download from Amazon.com is excellent. The mantras it covers are among the most ancient Vedic collections, namely Sri Rudram, Purusha Suktham, Mantra Pushpam and Sri Suktam. These mantras are among the most widely used for Vedic ceremonies. Just listening to them will bring you into mystical consciousness. If you are a scholar or enthusiast of sanskrit chanting and have some background in sanskrit chanting these audio files will be just the things you need to help you master these chants. The chants are chanted slow enough for students to chant along. The chants in this album follow the precise chanting style of South Indian temple priests. At only US $6.99 it is a great resource to have in your mobile device or your computer. You take the hallow spaces of South Indian temples along with you everywhere you go. Samples are available on Amazon.com.

Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant

Product Description on Amazon.com
"Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite space—and digging into the heart’s deepest well—to touch and be touched by the Divine Presence," teaches world music pioneer Jai Uttal. On Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant, Jai guides listeners through the practice of Kirtan—singing the many names of God and Goddess—an essential part of Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion. This sacred music form is for all people; there are no experts, nor beginners, and the practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Listeners join Jai Uttal to explore: the power of ancient Sanskrit syllables in chant to invoke the Divine, how to open the voice and learn to love the sound that comes from our bodies, more than two hours of music recorded by Jai Uttal to commune with the Divine through sacred chant, and the path of Bhakti and Kirtan, the journey of surrender, and much more.

I would give this CD 10 stars if I could. I listen when I paint, cook, relax, drive, anything. It is inspiring and makes me feel actually "closer" to spirit. His voice and talent are
gifts from God. Highly recommended. My 5 and 11 year old even love it.

Mystery Road by Kamal

MyHinduPage.org Review. Almost all the music in this CD inspires me. I use it when I am dreaming of the future. The earthy and airy sounds of the instruments, albeit electrical simulations, does the trick to get me into the anahatha chakra for pondering future projects. Especially track 1. African Papillon, 2. Shakuhaji Tales and 5. Ripples

"Mystery Road takes you on a beautiful, exotic journey. Each song reflects a different culture and leaves you feeling welcome in each. Warm, rich sounds, worthy of your undivided attention, yet wonderful for listening during quite times."

Chanting Om Vol. II - Splendor of Yoga

MyHinduPage.org Review. Check out the sample review on Amazon.com. This is one of the best and most creative recording of group Aum chanting I have heard. For those who are keyed to meditation through the heart chakra (anahatha chakra) this ambient music works very effectively.

Editorial Review on Amazon.com
The syllable of Om or AUM is said to be the primordial vibration of the universe. In the tradition of yoga, Om has been used as a powerful mantra for thousands of years. It's sound has the power to carry the listener's awareness into a deep state of meditative absorption.
Every CD from Music for Deep Meditation is designed with the utmost purity and integrity of sound, creating vehicles that are truly inducive for meditation and deep rest. We invite you to explore each one.

Track 1 Aum Chant - Meditation on The Eternal with Ocean Waves 34:43

Track 2 Chanting Om - Splendor of Yoga 29:35

Review by Creative Force "Susan" on Amazon.com
I love the original CD from the series, but this one is even better.
For starters, instead of a continuous wall of sound, you get beautiful waves of the sound of om chanted by a group of singers.

In track 1 you get Om chanted the traditional way as AUM and in the second track it is chanted as Om. (The Aum when you chant it continuously becomes Om, they are one and the same)

I feel this version is more gentle and beautiful. Also I love the instruments and the sound of the ocean waves in the background.

This is now my favorite recording to meditate with.

Secret of the Wind by Prem Joshua

Review on by Serge Kozlovsky on Amazon.com
Of what kind is this music? Is it a jazz? Yes, of course. It is spontaneous, there is live improvization. Maybe it's a world music? Sure! When recording this album a great number of live, folk instruments was used. Among them there are very rare, exotic ones. Have you ever heard, for example, how sounds dilruba - an ancient Indian string instrument, or santoor - a Persian string instrument, similar to European Hammer-Dulcimer? All those (and many other!) instruments sound in this album. The music of «Secret Of The Wind» has a unique ethnic colour. It is originated from the very roots, from the Mother Earth itself. Maybe then music of Prem Joshua is a new age. And that's also true! There is a breathing of new world in it, it is like a carpet, embroided with unusial patterns, weaved by many loving, careful hands. In «Secret Of The Wind» East and West are meeting. They are already together. It is not a Western or Eastern music any more - it is a new, common, all-human music.

That's why it cannot be classifized. It has no sense, when you listen «Secret Of The Wind». This album carries you like a slow river, and you glide along its waves, being drived by free wind. And the river becomes faster, becoming a quick steram of purest water, which carries you there... to the unknown. And that anticipating of the unknown fills your heart with pleasant emotion and joy.

22 (!) musicians from all over the world have taken part in the recording of «Secret Of The Wind». Their brilliant play and enthusiasm make this album bright and energetic. There's a lot of liveness in it. «Secret Of The Wind» streams by the fontans of light, rising-spirit energy.

That's such a music, listening to which one wants to sing. This music has a rare quality, because «Secret Of The Wind» is a music of freedom!

Desert Visions by Prem Joshua

Review by Thomas Kryton on Amazon.com
I stumbled onto this CD one day at a listening post and was at first drawn to it because of the cover. The album is a wonderful blend of East Indian, Arabic, African and Western music. The instruments and rhythms weave back and forth between the various influences in a spirited and lively manner. One track may have a hint of New Orleans Jazz balanced against the romantic and haunting sounds of the desert. Another track features East Indian vocals and tabla in a spirited dance with saxophone and flute. Overall easy to listen to ranging from sprightly to ambient in texture during the course of the album.

Mantra Mix: Tibetan Refugee Benefit Album (2-CD Set)

Review by M.Burgat on Amazon.com
The music is terrific! The opening track by Fatboy Slim is so hypnotic you will listen to it over and over. Sinead O'Connor's "This is to Mother You" crushed any negative thoughts about the controversial artist and Peter Gabriel's less digital remake of "Games Without Frontiers" is significantly more satisfying than the original. In addition to these known artists are some Buddhist chant tracks, one by the Dali Lama himself. These tracks are, for the most part, segregated to the 2nd CD so you can listen predominantly to the style of you choosing. The music and the chants make the perfect background music for an evening at home, the office or for those times when you will listen more closely like a long run or drive. In short this is one of those rare perfect all situation CDs. Disk 2 includes Quick Time interactive video of the Dali Lama and information regarding his beliefs (the disk also include the Quick Time program if you don't have it). Great for someone wanting to know more about the more religious based music/chants on the 2nd CD. This is the type of CD that your kids and your parents would enjoy listening to.

Review by Stephen R. Perry on Amazon.com
It was during the summer break from college, over thirty years ago, when I first heard Prayers to the Spiritual Master. I discovered it on the B side of the Hare Krishna Mantra single and I am pleased to see it included in this album re-release. Listening to it then produced the most profound effect. It brought tears to my eyes and seemed to fill me up from the depths of my being. I was literally struck with wonder and felt as though I was being given a glimpse of something infinitely precious, some core thing I had lost and long forgotten about, yet which just lay waiting to be discovered when I opened the door within. And this sacred sound vibration was the key. No, I wasn't on anything. All I can say is "Hear it for yourself." Because this is just one of the remarkable tracks on this truly beautiful album that celebrates the devotional tradition. To this day, it stands out as a beacon to those who would record or listen to consciousness changing music.
Thanks George, to you and your devotee friends at the temple, for such an offering of love. Yeah man, you can really HEAR the love shining through...

The Essential Ravi Shankar, Two Disc Collectors Edition

Review on Amazon.com by Steve Vrana
Master musician Ravi Shankar makes the following observations in the opening track, "An introduction to Indian Music" (from 1957's THE SOUNDS OF INDIAN MUSIC): "The improvisation is the highlight in Indian music. The sheer joy of creating on the spot by a musician, always coming back to the main theme in the raga he has chosen is what listeners look forward to....The Western listener will appreciate and enjoy our music if he listens with an open and relaxed mind." And for more than two and a half hours, Shankar takes us on a musical journey that covers five decades of recordings.

Disc 1: Out of the East (74:40)

Most of these tracks are ragas and are taken from his albums of the fifties and sixties. The most recent is "Dhun: Fast Teental" from 1967, the same year Shankar earned both the Billboard Recording Artist and Musician of the year honors. All tracks feature a small ensemble with Shankar accompanied only by tabla and tambura (and sarod on "Raga Palas Kafi)."

Disc 2: Into the West (78:29)

The tracks on this disc feature Shankar in collaboration with Western musicians. "Swara-Kakali" features famed violinist Yehudi Menuhin. "Discovery of India" is from the soundtrack album GHANDI, for which Shankar received an Oscar nomination for best score. There are two tracks from 1990's PASSAGES, which teamed Shankar with minimalist composer Phillip Glass. "Ragas in Minor Scale" features Shankar's ensemble playing a Glass composition, while "Offering" has Glass's ensemble performing a Shankar composition (the only track that Shankar does not perform on).

And, of course, it's only fitting that Shankar's most famous disciple be included. No fewer than three tracks feature George Harrison on autoharp: "Village Dance," "Memory of Uday" (Harrison also plays synthesizer on these two tracks), and "Friar Park." In addition, Harrison produced "Vandanaa Trayee."

This is a solid introduction to the music of India's best known musical ambassador. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
